The Socratic Parent: How to Navigate Raising Your Child by Asking the Right Questions
Paul Sweetow, LCSW and Winnetka counselor to children and teens, will speak on the topic, “The Socratic Parent: How to Navigate Raising Your Child by Asking the Right Questions.”
What one parenting strategy is the best? Paul believes it is to parent Socratically. In his new book, The Socratic Parent (available on Amazon), Paul teaches parents how to use a question format to guide their child. With this strategy children become more autonomous, build a healthy inner dialogue, and have a deeper connection with their parent. This one parenting tool will benefit every parent of any-aged child from youngsters to adult children. You will leave this presentation with tangible take-aways that you can immediately put into use.
Paul Sweetow, LCSW, is a graduate of the University of Chicago and has been in clinical practice for 30 years in Winnetka. He is also a karate world champion and seven-time consecutive national champion. Paul has written ten books, and his online program, Student Life Skills, provides useful tools for parents and teachers to help children learn skills for coping with their feelings in different life situations involving school, family and friends.
Lake Shore Unitarian Society is an open-minded community that inspires you to find your own spiritual path. We differentiate ourselves with lay-led Sunday services facilitated by member volunteers, a youth Religious Explorations program based upon Unitarian Universalist principles, and outstanding musical performances.
We embrace values shared by the world’s major religions and a set of principles that include justice, peace, compassion, and the inherent worth of every human being.
Whether you believe in God or not, or you are not sure, you’ll be welcomed warmly. We come together every Sunday to think about life’s “big questions,” support one another in finding our spiritual paths, and get inspired not just to talk about our values but to live them day to day.
