Writing College Admissions Essays: Advice From Some Experts!
The Book Stall welcomes the creative team behind the new book, A Guide to Writing College Admissions Essays: Practical Advice for Students and Parents. Cory Franklin, MD, his wife, college counselor Suzanne Franklin, college counselor Linda Black, and Paul Weingarten, a former senior member of the Chicago Tribune Editorial Board, have combined their knowledge and experience to produce a handy, readable manual that deals with practical problems students face when writing their college admission essays. This virtual program is free and open to the public.
About the Book: College admission selection is far more competitive than in the past and the college essay is a key component. In this succinct guide for students writing their college admissions essays, the authors offer suggestions on good topics to write about, and provide vital tips on writing approach, grammar, and usage. This book will help students craft readable, interesting essays to attract the college admissions reader and give students a creative voice and the means to express themselves. It also serves as a guide for anyone who wants to write better, more clearly and crisply.
Booklist says, “From the outset, they are frank about the book’s purpose: it is a place to start, and further resources are thoughtfully organized in the final pages. They also caution that a good essay is no guarantee of acceptance. Nonetheless, this volume is full of useful general advice and practical and specific directives, from the importance (or not) of choosing a prompt from the options on the Common App to rules for capitalization and how to avoid clichés.”
About the Authors: Cory Franklin is an intensive care physician turned essayist who has published four books. Suzanne Franklin and Linda Black are college counselors with more than 20 years of experience helping students with their choice of school (everywhere from community college to the Ivy League). Paul Weingarten is a former senior member of the Chicago Tribune Editorial Board.
