Seeing Words and Imagining the Word: Understanding Word Recognition and Reading Comprehension
Hyde Park Day School presents the Bellick Family Community Education Program.
Reading starts when the reader looks at the printed words. What happens next? The answer is surprisingly controversial—and it has many implications for how teachers should design reading instruction. Fortunately, scientific inquiry has produced many important ideas about how the system works—and these ideas can help teachers design better reading lessons.
In this session, Dr. Devin Kearns describes the science of the reading system and how words and meanings are connected. He explains how these ideas should influence instruction and also suggest ways parents can help their children with reading at home.
Dr. Kearns is an associate professor of Special Education in the Department of Educational Psychology in the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut and a research scientist for Haskins Laboratories at Yale University.
Please RSVP by February 28th by registering here.
