The Road from Belhaven: An Evening with Margot Livesey

Community Event

The Book Stall is delighted to host celebrated author Margot Livesey for an in-store discussion featuring her enchanting historical novel, The Road from Belhaven on Tuesday, February 20 at 6:30 pm. From the New York Times bestselling author of The Flight of Gemma Hardy and The Boy in the Field, comes a dazzling book about a young woman whose gift of second sight complicates her coming of age in late-nineteenth century Scotland. Luminous and transporting, there’s a subtle, otherworldly element to Livesey’s writing that makes the book irresistible from start to finish.

This is a ticketed program. The ticket price of $31.62 includes a copy of the book, and options include a ticket that admits two people (with one book) or one person with one book. Margot Livesey will be happy to sign her book! To purchase tickets, please visit our website or CLICK HERE.

More About the Book: The narrative that unfolds of Lizzie Craig, a young woman torn between love for her grandparents and the love of a man who may not have her best interests at heart; may, on the surface, seem familiar. Yet there’s a crucial dimension to Lizzie’s character: she has second sight. Growing up in the care of her grandparents on Belhaven Farm, Lizzie discovers as a small child that she can see into the future. But her gift is selective, she doesn’t, for instance, see that she has an older sister who will come to join the family. As her “pictures” foretell various incidents and accidents, she begins to realize a painful truth: she may glimpse the future, but she can seldom change it.

Nor can Lizzie change the feelings that come when a young man named Louis, visiting Belhaven for the harvest, begins to court her. After following Louis to Glasgow, though, she learns the limits of his devotion. Faced with a seemingly impossible choice, she makes a terrible mistake. But her second sight may allow her a second chance.

Chris Bohjalian, bestselling author of The Flight Attendant and Hour of the Witch, says, “Margot Livesey is a treasure: a writer who understands the magic and mysteries of the human soul, and brings that wisdom to novels that are both riveting and lush. The Road from Belhaven is a smart, profound, and beautiful book that draws you in and holds you tight.”
