College During COVID: Lessons from the Science of Adolescence
PROGRAM UPDATE (10.12.20): Heidi Stevens is under the weather, and she has asked her “On Purpose” podcast co-host, clinical psychologist John Duffy, Psy.D. (FAN ’20), to fill in for her.
Colleges and universities across the country have struggled to decide whether to keep campuses open, offer online instruction exclusively, or institute some combination of the two. For this webinar, FAN has invited back Laurence Steinberg, Ph.D., Distinguished University Professor and the Laura H. Carnell Professor of Psychology at Temple University, to discuss how our understanding of adolescent development can and should inform this difficult decision. He presented two excellent talks for FAN in 2014 in conjunction with the release of his bestselling book Age of Opportunity: Lessons from the new Science of Adolescence.
Prof. Steinberg is one of the world’s leading experts on adolescence. He is the author of nearly 500 articles and essays on development during the teenage years, and the author, co-author, or editor of 17 books. He has been a featured guest on numerous television programs, including CBS Morning News, Today, Good Morning America, 20/20, Dateline, PBS News Hour, and The Oprah Winfrey Show, and is a frequent consultant on adolescence for print and electronic media, including the New York Times and NPR.
Prof. Steinberg will offer an overview of his research into the risk-taking behaviors of young adults, their capacity for self-control. He will then be joined by clinical psychologist John Duffy, Psy.D. (FAN ’20), author of the bestseller Parenting the New Teen in the Age of Anxiety. He has been working in his clinical practice with individuals, couples, teens, and families for nearly twenty-five years. Dr. Duffy is also the author of the number-one bestselling The Available Parent. He shares his expertise several times a month on WGN Radio. Other appearances and citations include the Today show, E! News, Chicago Tribune, Fox Good Day Chicago, The Jam, WGN-TV, The Morning Blend, NPR, the Huffington Post, the Wall Street Journal, Redbook, Time, Good Housekeeping, Men’s Health, Chicago Parent, Cosmopolitan, Teen Vogue, Wired, Parenting, Your Teen, Parents, Family Circle, Chicago Sun-Times, and Real Simple magazine, among many others. Dr. Duffy is cohost of a popular podcast, better, with his wife Julie, as well as the podcast On Purpose with award-winning Chicago Tribune “Balancing Act” columnist Heidi Stevens.
